| × Want to help read apps? ×
| At utopian_heights, we believe in trying our best to make sure that we have players capable of being in-character join the game. At the same time, however, we want to allow players to have fun with series that frequently don't have anywhere to play other than massive multifandoms where things often end up getting lost, or overlooked.
So, how do we solve this problem?
By recruiting people to read apps in series that they are familiar with, since the original mods may not be familiar with them all.
If you feel that you would be a fair judge of apps, please comment here with your LJ username, email address, and the names of the fandoms you would be able to judge. If accepted, we'll reply to the comment, and if someone should send in an app for the fandoms you listed, we'll send the app to you in an email!
Note that in this community, acceptance requires two strong moderator approvals or three fairly certain approvals, so if a character is accepted before you have a chance to give feedback, that's why.
Thanks so much for all your help!

| × Can we improve the game for you? ×
| While the mods here at utopian_heights are dedicated to making this game as enjoyable as possible for the players, we're only human, and sometimes we make mistakes, or can't catch all the flaws.
Therefore, this thread will serve as a feedback thread, in which players can offer advice, note OOC characterization, report drama/bitchy behavior, ask questions in general, or even complain about mods.
(Yes, we mods realize that we have bitchy moments too, so we won't kill you if you complain about us. Honest.)
All comments to this thread are screened for privacy's sake.

| Want to apply at utopian_heights? Here are the directions:
× 001 ×
| This should be obvious: read the [Rules], [General Information], and [Superpowers 101]. They're actually important.
| × 002 ×
| Make sure that your character is actually available at the [Character List], and make sure that any potential PB that you list has not already been taken.
| × 003 ×
| Fill out the following information:
× Personal Information ×
Name: Your alias. Email: Duhr. Livejournal: Your personal journal. This is mandatory, even if you do not normally use your livejournal. AIM/MSN/Y!M: IM is not required, but highly advised. Experience: Tell us about how much experience you have had with either roleplaying or writing as a whole. Don't worry if this is your first time; we're very open to first-timers!
× Character Profile ×
Character Name: As this is an AU set in the US, please provide the given name first. If your character does not have a family name, you are free to make one up.
Series: Self-explanatory.
Played By: At utopian_heights, we use PBs, meaning that characters are represented by a real life person, usually a celebrity. Try to choose someone who resembles your character--and remember, photomanipulation is your friend! If you're highly unfamiliar or uncomfortable with choosing PBs, simply put down "I need assistance with finding a PB," and the mods or some other players in the game will help you out.
Affiliation: For descriptions of the different affiliations, see here.
Superpower: Provide a description of your character's superpower (or, if you do not wish for him/her to have one, say so here). You are free to take on canon abilities, or to make ones of your own; keep in mind, however, that a superpower must not be overboard in terms of ability. Superpowers that allow a character too much freedom to godmod will be frowned upon.
History: Provide a general history for your character, describing their personality and alternate universe background.
[NOTE: If you apply for a character that has been previously taken, you are required to take up the previous player's history and the relationships that the previous player built over the course of the game. To find specific logs for a character, see here.]
× Writing Sample × This should be written in third-person, past tense, and the minimum length should be about two paragraphs. The point of the writing sample is to show us how you plan to play your character, so try to write a scene where much of their personality can come out. This is the most important part of the application, so spend the most time on this. Also, word economy is important; while long applications are fine, make sure that everything in the application matters. Spending several paragraphs talking about the sheen of Renji's hair, for instance, is not okay. [NOTE: If you take a previous player's superpower and history, try to pay extra-special attention to the writing sample--we will be more strict.]
Here is the application code (please simply use the standard LJ font and size; size one font is hard on the mods' eyes, especially with long apps):
| × 004 ×
| Submit the application as comments on this entry! The only thing we ask is that you keep your Personal Information section on a separate comment (this will remain screened for privacy).
|
| |
|
| More will be added when the mods have the time, but for now, if you need ideas for your character's superpower, you can consult the Wikipedia List of Comic Book Superpowers. | |
|
| × RULES ×
| 1. Holds will last for seven days.
2. During those seven days, a decision on any application for the character being held shall not be made until the person placing the hold has submitted an application.
3. Holds do not bar other people from applying for a character. All applications will still be put under consideration.
4. A person may reserve up to two characters at a time.
5. A person may renew a reservation on a character if no one has applied for that specific character during the time of the previous hold.
6. Refer to the [Character List] before making reservations.

| GENERAL RULES× 001 ×
| Asses are meant for grabbing and nothing else. If you decide to act like a dick, more likely than not you will find yourself kicked out of the game. Do not let this happen. Be respectful of everyone in the game, and if there are disagreements, settle them nicely and privately.
| × 002 ×
| Players must be in character, and warnings will be sent out if the moderators feel that a player is getting too out of line. Original characters are not allowed in this game, and it's for a reason. Additionally, be reasonable with the types of situations you place your character in; for instance, the main focus of this game is not on the romantic aspects of the lives of these characters, so repeatedly placing a character in scenes involving intercourse without other types of interactions is not okay.
| × 003 ×
| Powerplaying, or godmodding, is not allowed unless all parties involved agree beforehand. At utopian_heights, we define powerplaying as having two tiers:
1. If you control the actions of another player or a character that is currently not taken, this is powerplaying - this is particularly important with regards to reactions and motions in fight threads. 2. Applying for two characters that are very close or interact often in canon is not allowed - if you are applying for a shinigami, this means that you cannot have more than one shinigami in the same division; if you are applying for an Arrancar, you cannot have two that interact often in canon; if you are applying for a Vaizored, you cannot have more than one. While minimal interaction between the characters you have (essentially, one-person power-playing) can be excused, the point of a roleplay is to encourage interaction, so keep it to a minimum.
If you see any instances of powerplaying in the game, please tell us.
| × 004 ×
| You must be a committed player. This means that you are required to post at least one log per month (regardless of how many characters you have). If you must request a hiatus, do so on the OOC community.
| × 005 ×
| Logs with adult themes must be appropriately labeled. While we will not place restrictions on the type of content or language that arises in any thread, it is your responsibility to label logs as mature, with appropriate warnings and ratings.
| × 006 ×
| Use proper English. Spell-check and proofreading are imperative to an enjoyable game, although occasional typos are by all means allowed. Smileys and netspeak must not be used in logs, nor anywhere else unless they are in character.
| × 007 ×
| Better safe than sorry. If there is an issue which is not covered by the rules, feel free to ask on this thread.
| × 008 ×
| Three strikes! At utopian_heights, we run on a strike system. Breaking these rules three times will result in being struck from the game. Emails will be sent out to inform players of strikes, and strikes will be erased every six months.
| LOGGING, JOURNALS, AND POSTING× 001 ×
| Logging can be done through IM, email, personal LJs, and almost any other method you can think of--the only exception being that you can not submit in-progress logs to the main community (it is reserved for mod posts and compiles). Logs are to be written in third person, past tense.
utopian_heights provides yet another method of logging that many players prefer, which is logging on 110 Forums. To make use of the forums, please register a username, then comment on the permissions thread for Utopian Heights; after being added, you should be able to see in-progress and plotting threads, and will be able to make some of your own!
| × 002 ×
|
utopian_heights works on a timeline system. This means that you can roleplay things as far back as you wish. However, in terms of where things currently are, utopian_heights corresponds to current day, except adding 60 years on. (In other words, if today were July 7th, 2007, you should log no further than July 7th, 2067.)
| × 003 ×
| Character journals are not required, and what occurs in journals will not be considered part of utopian_heights canon unless mentioned in logs.
| × 004 ×
| Posting should be done by a player participating in the log. All finished logs, called compiles, should be submitted to the main utopian_heights community.
This form is to be used when posting:
The compiles themselves should be titled in this manner: [Log] Character 1, Character 2, etc.
Additionally, players are responsible for tagging their compiles in this manner: log, character 1's full name, character 2's full name
| CHARACTER GAIN× 001 ×
| How many characters you're allowed to play depends on how many logs you have completed. You are allowed to apply for two characters off the bat. Further characters require:
3rd: Must have completed 5 logs, at least 2 for each character 4th: Must have completed 15 logs, at least 3 for each character 5th: Must have completed 25 logs, at least 5 for each character 6th: Must have completed 50 logs

| × CURRENT SITUATION ×
| On January 1st, 2067, the survivors of those who had been experimented on during Operation Utopian Heights were released from their contractual confinement. In terms of monetary compensation, those of legal age were given two million dollars, while minors received half the amount. The money, of course, was only given after each victim agreed to sign a contract stating that they would not release details of the experiments that had been conducted on them, and the money was meant to cover any damages accrued, whether psychological or physical.
Unfortunately, the government hadn't considered the types of mutations and other abilities that began to surface as a result.
Each scientist who had signed up for the opportunity to conduct research on those involved in OUH used his or her own methods for genetic alteration, resulting in a wide range of effects. Some gained superhuman strength. Others, mental capacities beyond their wildest dreams. Yet more gained inexplicable control over the physical elements--fire, water, wind. Needless to say, many of the scientists were thrilled, wished to boast of their successes, about how they rendered a little girl capable of crushing stones between her fingers alone.
And so, word got out. They were merely rumors, of course, rumors of 'freaks' who had acted as government guinea pigs--who knew if the stories were actually true? Still, rumors were dangerous in their own right--there was nothing the government could do to stop them, and then how could anyone explain when a man in downtown Las Vegas suddenly exploded into a large pool of water in the middle of a casino?
Not everyone believes. Yet. Some of the survivors take advantage of this fact, using their powers for personal gain, a way of getting back at the government who had made them suffer so much, for so long. Others, wanting to legitimize their existence, or simply wishing to deal their own type of vigilante justice, use their powers in positive ways.
Childhood superheroes come to life.
| × LOCATION AND LANDMARKS ×
| Disclaimer: Most of the stock photographs used below are the work of photographer Ed Carreon, and other than Yucca Mountain Nuclear Facilities, none of these places exist in real life.
- CEREULAN SKY APARTMENTS -

One of the nicest apartment complexes within an hour of Yucca Mountain, Cereulan Sky Apartments features plenty of luxuries, including both indoor and outdoor pools, a bar open twenty-four hours a day, and high-speed wireless internet systems installed in every room. When Operation Utopian Heights began, many well-known scientists flocked here to stay.

Thirty years later, some scientists have left, but a few have stayed with hopes of once again returning to work on OUH back on Yucca Mountain.
- CHIA RESTAURANT -

Located just above Sparks Woodfire Grill, Chia Restaurant was opened shortly after the termination of Operation Utopian Heights by an elderly cook who had been taken in for experimentation. As the participants in the study had grown close over the thirty years spent in confinement, to this day Chia Restaurant is a common hangout for those who had been caught in the fray. Rumor is that sometimes, members of the Justice League meet here.

In terms of the food itself, Chia Restaurant features a wide variety of foods from all different ethnic groups, including Italian, Chinese, Greek, and Mexican. The restaurant is about mid-range in terms of price and setting, while the Grill below offers a more casual option for those who don't wish to lay their napkins on their laps.
- EIFFEL CAFE -

Located in the middle of Las Vegas, this little cafe is well-received thanks to the many private rooms that it offers on the side, rooms where guests don't have to worry about snooping waiters and waitresses. It's a little pricey, but at least the view is nice.
- GALYUU BAR -

Situated right next to one of the largest casinos in Las Vegas, Galyuu Bar is the type of hangout that people won't find unless they've heard about it through word of mouth. Fortunately for the barowner, this happens fairly frequently, as Galyuu Bar has become, over the years, a center for intelligence exchange between the different affiliations.
The popularity of the bar has made it possible for the owner to hire the best of security, and so here, no matter what affiliation you're from, you're bound to be able to find someone from the opposite affiliation--and when it comes to those in Galyuu Bar, their knowledge can always be bought, for a price.
- JET NIGHTCLUB -

There's nothing incredibly special about Jet Nightclub. It's a decent size, has decent lighting, decent drinks, decent music. However, there's one major plus to this particular nightclub--no background checks.
- MERCURY PUBLIC LIBRARY -

Some people tend to ask what such a large and rather well-kept library is doing in the middle of nowhere, well beyond the suburbs of Las Vegas, in the little city of Mercury. Fortunately, beyond that slight bit of curiosity, most people don't venture to look much further.
If they did, however, eventually they might realize that the place is a little more than what meets the eye. Secret passages, anti-radiation rooms--this is the headquarters and communication center for the Justice League.
- STARLIGHT LAKE RESORT -

The largest resort in the state of Nevada, Starlight Lake Resort was an attraction which opened shortly after the termination of Operation Utopian Heights. Its large size requires an equally large staff to keep things running smoothly--and who better to hire than the bedraggled folks trekking down from Yucca Mountain?
Here, the work is tough, long, and the slightest mistake can get you fired. Fortunately, experiments work in similar ways, and so many of the Yuccans have managed to keep their jobs here--although, what they're waiting for? No one knows.
- UTOPIAN HEIGHTS COMPLEX -

Located right outside of the Yucca Mountain Research Center, Utopian Heights Complex is an apartment complex that was inhabited by the participants of Operation Utopian Heights. Or, well, those who had the experiments conducted on them, of course; the scientists got far better lodgings than the barren, unfurnished rooms of Utopian Heights. An ironic name, indeed.

Today, Utopian Heights--or, at most people call it, U. Heights (Utopian is far too good of a name for the place)--is barren, abandoned, dust settling all along the beige-colored walls. At least, so the government thinks...
- WEISNER RESEARCH CENTER -

One of the most controversial research centers in the United States, Weisner is known for taking up many different projects involving eugenics. Those at the head of the place and in the know about Operation Utopian Heights have managed to fool the government into believing that all these efforts are for the sake of returning the OUH mutants to a relative state of normalcy; truth is, however, that many members of the Apollo Alliance have moved here since the termination of the project, looking for ways to continue their research.
While most of the building is indeed devoted to the study of eugenics, below the building, should anyone be fortunate--or unfortunate--enough to stumble upon the entrances, lies the main meeting place for the Weisner Group, the organization of mutants and allies who wish to use their powers in ways that will secure them more power in the world.
- YUCCA MOUNTAIN NUCLEAR WASTE FACILITY -

Over thirty years ago, Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Facility was built, intended to be the largest such facility yet for the sake of being able to build more nuclear weapons to protect the United States from outside threats.

On the outside, the place looks run-down and old, but inside one will find some of the most state of the art technology, clearly far beyond whatever would be needed for containing nuclear waste alone. Here, thousands of people were shoved into rooms, rendered unconscious, then exposed to different types of radiation after receiving gene therapy.

Since the termination of the project, those areas of the facility have been shut down as well. However, all the knowledge, the research, the logs, they still remain somewhere in the abandoned rooms...
| × AFFILIATIONS ×
| In utopian_heights, there are quite a large range of affiliations that your character may be a part of, regardless of whether or not they themselves have superpowers. Although no one has to officially join an affiliation, in general people fall under at least one of the categories--and the more time goes by, the more suspicious behavior we start to see from OUH survivors, the affiliations will begin to grow stronger, and those who refuse to join will be left behind.
The Apollo Alliance, named after one of the most radical scientists who took part in OUH, consists of people who fully believe in and encourage further experimentation with regards to those with special abilities. Apollo Alliance encourages the use of eugenics for any type of ailment imaginable, and believes that such abilities as the ones that have been surfacing should be exploited to their fullest. Good or evil? To them, there's no bright line--there is simply science.
The Beta Alliance serves as the counterpart to AA. Members of the Beta Alliance also believe in the theory that there have been people who somehow managed to gain superpowers through some covert government operation, but they believe that such behavior should not be allowed nor encouraged. The Beta Alliance largely consists of human rights activists, a new version of the pro-lifers of old.
The Justice League, named after a group of fictional superheroes frequently found in vintage cartoons, are a group consisting of both mutants and regular humans who work together to use these newfound abilities for the greater good. The Justice League is extremely selective; people are not allowed to join the JL unless they have tangible proof that they either have a superpower or have met someone with one in the past, just to discourage hecklers and disbelievers from joining just to mock the organization.
The Cimarron League consists of complete non-believers. They're not a very serious group, often simply jeering at the other groups for believing in such rubbish, and usually membership is far from an official thing. Still, when the other groups get too serious in their attempts to nab government attention, or worse yet, government funds, the Cimarron League usually steps in.
The Weisner Group, funded by the well-known Weisner Research Center, is a secret group which consists of mutants who use their abilities for stealing, cheating, murder, and any number of crimes. Occasionally, they work in conjunction with non-mutants with lots of wealth and power, and occasionally they pay visits to some of the scientists in the Apollo Alliance, but generally they like to keep to themselves, trusting very few. Not all people who work at the Weisner Research Center are aware of or are part of the Weisner group, and those who are usually have other supposed alliances on the side, sometimes for show.
The American Government usually sides with the Cimarron League in terms of their official stance, even though each employee can have his or her own opinion of the situation.
If you don't think your character belongs in any of these affiliations, you are free to app him or her as undecided with a description of what organization(s) he/she might be leaning towards.
